I was born in Ohio. I grew up in an inner ring suburb of Cleveland. My siblings and I lived in the same house and we graduated from the same high school. My parents are still married and now live in Cleveland for the lower property taxes. I live in Cleveland, for now.
What's Wrong with Drew Carey?
From Wikipedia:
Drew Carey in his U.S. Marines uniform, with rank insignia of a Corporal
Drew Carey was the youngest of Lewis and Beulah Carey's three sons and raised in Parma, Ohio. When he was eight years old his father died from a brain tumor. According to his autobiography, he was born with six toes on his right foot and he played the cornet and trumpet in the marching band of James Ford Rhodes High School, from which he graduated in 1975.
He continued on to college at Kent State University and was expelled twice for poor academic performance. He left KSU after three years, but not before becoming a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. After leaving the university, Carey joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1980 and served for six years.He relocated to Las Vegas for a few months in 1982, and for a short time worked as a bank teller and a waiter at Denny's.
What Drew Carey’s solution to fixing Cleveland. I will let him speak for himself since he is the face of this new improved movement. Here is more nonsense information:
Their motto: Free minds and free markets.
These are some the places they suggest can be stolen by corporate interests "privatized":

These are some the places they suggest can be stolen by corporate interests "privatized":
* Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport
* Parking Facilities
* Solid Waste Collection
* Building Maintenance
* Transit Operations
* Parks Operation and Maintenance
* Libraries
* Public Works and Community Development Services
I agree with the free minds part.
Carey was interviewed by the Cleveland Plain Dealer to promote these videos. I suggest that everyone go back a few pages to May 28, 2010. NCrissieB gives an excellent and cogent discussion of why Libertarianism doesn't work.
My take is the market is not free. It is fixed on behalf of the rich, powerful, lucky (LeBron James), well-connected and to me especially the well informed. Since most people are missing at least one of the above attributes, it is difficult to be part of the rich and powerful, or for us to defend ourselves. We are at a distinct disadvantage. The Libertarian movement continues to sell 100% of nothing to the remaining 98% of us non-rich people.
Wall Street:
Some people need more help than others. Life can be easier but conservatives have made it harder then blame people’s difficulties on them. Sure, most people are their own problem and their own solution but sometimes we need a little help. We need a floor. We need someone to remove the banana peel not throw more down. Then they blame us for falling flat on our faces. That is the Libertarianism, IMO. Making rich people richer is great for rich, but hasn’t helped me or my friends. We are left cleaning up the crap.
Free market hand
There is are several problems that I have with the private sector and with turning over government functions to the private sector. The last president privatized military functions to the point where we have a mercenary army that are better paid than our own military. Why is that? Why is that a problem? The problem is the private sector is about making money. That is it. It does not care if it kills people, pollutes the environment, lies, cheats or steals. It does not care. All the private sector cares about is profit. The private sector is also good at not being responsible or responsive to the public sector namely us. One glaring example is that of Exxon-Mobil. They have dragged their feet for over 30 years to not take care of their obligations with regard to the Exxon-Valdez.
I thought that people should clean up their messes and say they’re sorry when they do something wrong. RIGHT?
At least with the government, if they are not responsive or responsible, we can replace them every 2, 4, or 6 years.
We can write, phone, e-mail or petition in person.
We can run for office.
We can write letters to the editor of the local paper.
We can blog.
We can vote.
We can canvass and encourage our fellow citizens to vote and do their part.
The government is us.
I do not want any part of a solution that is not home grown. I do not want a solution from someone who worked hard yes, but is also very lucky and doesn’t seem to understand that. If Drew Carey wants to move back to Cleveland from the lovely sunny Southern California and start a business, I can hardly wait for his suggestions. Then he will have some skin in the game. Otherwise, I am just not interested in anything he has to say. Drew Carey also is missing one thing that I notice a lot of conservatives are missing. That would be mercy, kindness, putting himself in others shoes. Drew could learn something from Dale Carnegie's, How to win friends and influence people. Or he may want to read Robert Fulghum's All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten. Both are still relevant today since corporate senior management Libertarians have forgotten a few things.
If the government doesn’t work, we have to make it work better. It was easy for me to loathe the federal government during the last 30 years. The conservative movement did not help me, my family or many of my friends. It is difficult for me to pay taxes for my own oppression. On the other hand, I hope that some little kid finished high school, went to college and got a good job. That is why I paid my taxes. Someone did the same for me and for you. I guess you just want to take the ladder up and leave everyone else behind. I believe you are MEAN, NASTY AND SELFISH...with a smile.
I am not the only one who has a problem with Drew Carey giving us his dose of wisdom. In Cleveland, Anastasia Pantsios has given her take on Ohio Daily Blog, dated June 4, 2010. Also, the editor of the Scene magazine gave his take, but then backed off. I liked his first opinion.
What's wrong with Cleveland? What's wrong with Drew Carey? I asked these questions because Cleveland like much of the rust belt has an identity crisis. We have a crisis of confidence. We have a crisis that cries out for leadership and who answered...Drew Carey and his "Reason Foundation" with their new/old ideas to help Cleveland.
Nope, not buying what you are selling, SIR!
